BEHAVIORAL
OPTOMETRISTS
Behavioral
Optometrists are Doctors of Optometry (OD) who have taken
special, certification level coursework for specialized diagnosis
and treatment of Central Vision Processing Disorder. Their
coursework and certification meets the standards of the Optometric
Extension Program Foundation, Inc., located in Santa Ana,
California. Behavioral Optometrists' examination and treatment
is designed to identify and correct many vision disorders
which are not apparent with the simple reading of the Snellan
Chart, the most commonly used visual acuity chart. The entire
eye musculature, related facial and upper torso responses
to visual stimuli, and detailed examination of eye functioning
such as coordination, focal synchronicity and pupil response
differentiation, field width and other specialized measures
of visual function are tested. Persons with functional deficiencies
or overcompensations often experience difficulty in reading,
reading comprehension, expressive writing skills, and fine
motor control while attempting to write. Some OD's have become
adept at diagnosing and treating persons with autism. In your
calls to these optometrists, determine the extent of their
experience with autistic children and adults.
